Welcome new Testers

Hello ABS users! I just wanted to tell a bit more about ABS 2.5 development and progress. We would also like to welcome Jose Mitjavila and Juan Galan as our new feature tester/Reviewer! We certainly need help and their support it's invaluable for us.

Now the report: We have 90% done re-writing the main backup core. This module will do the comparison between source and destination. This new addition not only will allow to discover files that were created/deleted or modified at the source, but also to inform about new version at the destination.

New files at the destination or remote location means the file version of the source is older than the remote; this could be very useful for teams collaborating, and when a new file is identified at the destination, the  Backup will push all new versions to remote and get newer files from remote to local!!!!!.

We are really exited as the software almost exponentially, this will bring to all our users an even peace of mind when it comes down to always have the latest and at the same time keep our data safe.  .

A little preview of the new ABS

Hi there ABS fanatics! I though in sharing some news to warm up your weekend. We had just been so busy trying to get out of the oven ABS 2.5, more and more I believe this will be the version to be release.

We think instead of another incremental upgrade with 2.3, go ahead and deliver something above and beyond with what we think a MAYOR upgrade for ABS!. I don't want to share too much about the features we're working on (also you can read more in our website www.automaticbackup.frigerio-ar.com), but I thought in sharing a screen shot. At least, this will give you a pretty good idea of what's coming.

Cheers, I don't have a tentative release date but I can assure you it's not far away!!!!.

ABS Version 2.3 - Progress Report

ABS 2.3 Happy Friday to all! we at ABS are extremely exited about the progress done so far. Being small does not mean to think small, we definitively spend time not only working to solve the problem but rather in paving the road for a more flexible program.

Now the report card (ouch!!)
* ABS main Executable, have been improved and reduced in size from 2.2 to now 0.99Mbytes!!!! (What a diet!!!)
* Source code organized and re-written in a more .NET managed code (lot of old code deleted).
* Rewrite the configuration UI, now working in Bi-Directional sync type of back-up
* Now the UI will communicate what is wrong with the profile (Functionality already exits in 2.1)
* We have improved the UI to mange/organize and display Backup Profiles (See pictures below for a quick preview)
* More to come (so far target GA for ABS will be 2.5)

Profile Screen have 4 different views. Notice now the profiles also shows the .scn (main scan log file) this helps to trouble shoot and see what made it to the backup.

The profiles have 3 icons Blue (OK scheduled), Pink(Disabled) and Red(Broken)

Also the profiles can be organized by type, like the example displaying profiles organized in the frequency in which they will be executed.

ABS version 2.3

Greetings... It looks like we are not going to rest until our heart is content. We are re-designing the Profile Management, not only we are planning to provide a much pleasant experience to users, but at the same time we are cleaning a lot of old source code laying out the foundation to a much easier software evolution.

Now the profiles will be organized in categories in a tree view like; the view can be changed reorganizing the tree in different logical structures (DLL custom control effort done). Now we are integrating this new view to the main screen of ABS, hopefully this will not turn into a Pandora box, and the integration can be done rather quick.
We are introducing a lot of new dll's for Backup Profile Management; this possibly can introduce 3d party collaboration, and integration will see.

Automatic Folder Sync

ABS Automatic Folder Synchronization, This weekend we were very busy testing a new logic that will allow ABS to automatically sync two folders; this represents a mayor improvement adding two way synchronization or live update of source only or live update of destination only! We are still deciding in the best implementation but sure enough will be something that is simple and make sense.

Hopefully this feature can be released in ABS ver. 2.2.2, we are testing and working to release 2.2.1, not sure if there is enough time to include it.

Minor Bug Alert - ABS 2.2.0

ABS minor bug alert, Under certain conditions the information box -Next Action Backup- section will be blank! This does not mean ABS is not actively paying a close attention to the active backup profiles. This was Fix in version 2.2.1 and also improved the watchdog time logic to streamline the Idle/busy CPU time. Version 2.2.1 will be available shortly!

This version also introduces a cosmetic change,
  • The EXIT button from the main screen was renamed to SHUTDOWN as it better reflects its usage.
  • Backup Profiles now will have a tip under the mouse displaying the source and destination backup folders. Furthermore, if the profile is disabled will be shown there.

Encrypted Backup - Rijndael Method

ABS software will support 256 bit key encryption! This will represent a mayor step forward for ABS to have a solid secure simple incremental backup with all security needed to protect data, from lost or intrusion.

We just started the project codename 'Securitech', at first it seems it would not require extensive code. We do envision a rather tedious test process. At the beginning we might add an extra application to decrypt data, later this could be integrated with ABS in a long awaited restore functionality.

a little side note into the encryption mode,

Rijndael is used for both classified and non-classified government information today and is seen as being practically crack-proof. While the algorithm is seen as being theoretically able to be cracked, it is not a realistic threat with today's level of technology. Brute force attacks against Rijndael have proven ineffective to date. Side channel attacks, which work to attack the implementations of the cipher rather than the cipher itself, have proven that a crack of Rijndael is possible but not a practical concern unless the crack is running on the same server as the encryption is happening on.

Stay tuned my friends!

P.S. If you would like to participate, we're in desperate need for testers. Thanks in advance.
